There are a wide
variety of boats & hotels currently
operating in
the Galapagos Islands. The boats operate strictly within the
Galapagos archipelago and do not extend their voyages outside this
region. Visitors are required to purchase a return airline ticket from
mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) in
order to reach the Galapagos Islands.

GALAPAGOS DATES / TIME OF
YEAR
- you need to
narrow the time of year to visit the Galapagos Islands. For peak
high season dates (April, July, August, December &
January) it is strongly recommended making reservations (or tentative
reservations) well in advance (minimally 6 months) to ensure ample
cruise options.
Leaving
arrangements until the last minute
may result in limited or no available options. Galapagos is
visited all year round, but for warmer water & temperatures it is
best to visit between mid-November through to late April. The
seas are rougher in late September through to the end of October.

GALAPAGOS BUDGET -
in
order to make a decision of what cruise, boat or package is best for
you, your
budget will greatly determine your feasible options. For those
who do not like spending extended periods on boats, or for those that
have very young children, a land-based
package is usually prefered. With any given visit to the
Galapagos Islands, there are three main costs:
- The
roundtrip
Galapagos airline ticket
- This is fixed costs,
regardless of
the actual time spent in Galapagos;
- There are high and low
season flight
rates
- Visitors have the option to
fly from
either Quito or Guayaquil out to the islands, and then return back to
either Guayaquil or Quito at the end of your visit;
- Roundtrip airline tickets
are booked
in conjunction with any given Galapagos package: flights dates are
guaranteed for package dates. Visitors wishing to fly our earlier
and/or stay on after the package dates, is subject to flight seat
availabilities.

TYPE
- Option
1: LIVE ABOARD GALAPAGOS CRUISE
- This involves sleeping
aboard the
boat all (sometimes involves one night in a hotel on 4-nights);
passengers onboard travel to far islands and therfore see a wider
variety of flora, fauna and islands. Most boats have upper/lower
berths (bunk beds). Cruises are offered in 3-night, 4-night and
7-night packages.
- Apart from the first and
last day of
a cruise, there are two daily island visits (one in the morning and one
in the afternoon); each visit generally last two to three hours;
- There are four types of
cruise
vessels (motor, sail, catamaran and
cruise ship) that are categorized into five classes (economic, tourist,
tourist superior, first and luxury). Generally, as one moves up the
classes the yachts increase in size and capacity, and offer a greater
selection of onboard amenities that include air conditioning and
private bathrooms.
- One of the most imporrtant
factors
in a cruise is the Naturalist guide. He or she can make all the
difference in how passengers experience and learn about the Galapagos.
- Option
2:
LAND-BASED GALAPAGOS HOTEL PACKAGE
- This involves staying in a
hotel and
enjoying daily tours (both naviagation and land) to attractions
in the near vicinity. Daily tours are limited to Bartolome, North
Seymour, South Plazas, Santa Fe and Santa Cruz Islands. Land-base
Galapagos hotel packages are also offer scuba diving packages.
Most land-based packages are either 3-night or 4-night packages.

GALAPAGOS PACKAGE
LENGTH (3, 4 or 7 NIGHTS)
- The first and last day of
any given
cruise is mainly occupied travelling to and from mainland
Ecuador. Flights depart mainland Ecuador between 07h30 and 09h30,
arriving into Galapagos between 09h30 and 11h30 in the morning of the
first day of any given cruise. Furthermoe, flights take off from
Galapagos between 10h15 and 12h15 in the morning of the last day of a
cruise. Therefore, the first day is really half a day, while the
last day is barely a quarter day in Galapagos. All the other days
are full days.
- A 7-night package is really
6 full
days in Galapagos, with two short days at the beginning &
end. Similarly a 4-night package is really 3 full days in
Galapagos, with two short days at the beginning &
end, while a 3-night package is only two full days, with two
short days at the beginning & end.
- On a cost-per-day basis,
the longer
you are in Galapagos, the better value it is on a cost-per-day
basis. The cost of the airline ticket and Park entrance fee
remain the same, regardless of the actual time spent in Galapagos.
